Transport Group Artistic Director Jack Cummings III and Executive Director Robyn Hussa have announced that the first New York revival of Tad Mosel’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, All the Way Home, will begin performances Thursday, October 26 at 8pm at the Connelly Theatre, 220 East 4 Street. All the Way Home, which is directed by Mr. Cummings (who received a Drama Desk Award nomination for his direction of Transport Group’s The Audience), is scheduled to open Sunday, November 5, at 3pm.
Based on James Agee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, A Death in the Family, All the Way Home is a portrait of early twentieth century family life and the crushing intrusion of sudden death upon a Tennessee woman who must consequently cope with the loss of her husband and the necessity of raising their children alone. Originally produced on Broadway in 1960, the play was directed by Arthur Penn, and starred Lillian Gish, Arthur Hill, and Colleen Dewhurst who received a Tony Award for her performance.
Playwright Tad Mosel, who in addition to the Pulitzer Prize also received the New York Drama Circle Critics Award for Best Play for All the Way Home, was a writer for the early live television series Playhouse 90, Omnibus, Goodyear Television Playhouse, and Chevrolet Tele-Theater. His screenplays include Dear Heart and Up the Down Staircase. Mr. Mosel received the 1977 Emmy Award for outstanding writing for the landmark PBS mini-series, “The Adams Chronicles.” All the Way Home was adapted for film and twice for television. Mr. Mosel currently lives in Concord , New Hampshire.
The cast of All the Way Home is Barbara Andres, Patrick Boll, John Braden, Alice Cannon, Corinne Edgerly, Chandler Frantz, Patrick Gilbert, Joseph Kolinski, Michael Lewis, Tom Ligon, Ben Masur, Joanna Parson, Monica Russell, Irma St. Paule, and Letty Serra.
The scenic design for All the Way Home is by Sandra Goldmark costume design is by Shana Albery & Kathryn Rohe; lighting design is by R. Lee Kennedy (Drama Desk nominee for The Audience). Original music is by Ellen Weiss. The music supervisor is Lanny Meyers. Casting is by Nora Brennan Casting. The production stage manager is Rebecca Yarsin.
Founded in 2001 by Artistic Director Jack Cummings III and Executive Director Robyn Hussa, Transport Group is a not-for-profit theatre company that develops and produces work by American playwrights and composers with the aim of exploring the American conscience in the 20 th and 21 st centuries. Transport Group presented its premiere production in 2002: Thornton Wilder’s Our Town, which featured older actors in the roles of Emily and George and a twelve-year-old girl as the Stage Manager. Its second production, Requiem for William, an evening of seven seldom produced plays by William Inge, that featured a cast of 26 as well as original songs, premiered in 2003. In 2004 the company presented the first New York revival of Michael John LaChiusa’s First Lady Suite, which received rave reviews, played to sold-out houses, and earned two Drama Desk Award nominations including outstanding revival of a musical. Recent productions include the world premiere of the musical The Audience, which featured a cast of 46 actors and earned three Drama Desk Award nominations, including outstanding musical; Normal , a new musical about a mother’s battle to save her daughter from anorexia; and cul-de-sac, a new play by Tony Award nominee John Cariani.
All the Way Home plays Wednesday through Monday at 8pm , Saturday at 2pm , and Sunday at 3pm through Saturday, November 18, at the Connelly Theatre, 220 East 4th Street , between Avenues A & B (6 to Astor Place, W/N to 8th Street or F/V to Second Avenue ).
