MAY 13 - JUNE 8
Following sold-out engagements abroad, Moses Pendleton's wildly popular MOMIX will return to The Joyce Theater for a four-week season, May 13 – June 8, with two Pendleton classics Passion and Lunar Sea. Both pieces have garnered extraordinary acclaim performing around the world in Australia, Brazil, Chile, France, Greece, Italy, New Zealand, Portugal, Spain and the United Kingdon, as well as regularly packed houses throughout the United States. Tickets, priced at $42 ($33 for Joyce members). and in celebration of The Joyce’s 25th Anniversary Season, tickets to Sunday evening performances are $25 and can be purchased by calling JoyceCharge at 212-242-0800 or via the internet at www.joyce.org. The Joyce Theater is located at 175 Eighth Avenue (@ 19th street) in Chelsea.
One of the dance world’s most visually stunning companies, MOMIX will open this month-long season with two weeks of Pendleton’s masterwork Passion, a surreal and erotic exploration of passion, birth and being that fuses diverse images from Chinese tomb treasures to Renaissance paintings. Set to Peter Gabriel’s score for Martin Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ, Passion is at once humorous and mystical, sensual and irreverent, and bursts with the gravity-defying sights that Momix is known for, including a near-nude man suspended over an abyss, a dancer almost engulfed by fiery red ribbons, and a many-headed, many-limbed god.
For the final two weeks of this must-see season, MOMIX will present Lunar Sea, an out of this world montage of cinematic moments performed partly in black light, providing the show with playful elements that border on the surreal, all executed with the flawless technique and mind-blowing strength and precision that are Momix’s hallmark. Accompanied by Pendleton’s projections and lighting — by turn psychedelic and oscillating — the dancers magically morph from floating mermaids into a six-legged spider or a crablike carnivore in this wild fantasia that transports the audience to a never before-seen galaxy.
After its first quarter century, MOMIX remains a great introduction to dance for people who are not sure whether dance is for them, and a treat for dance fans of any age.
Passion will be performed the first two weeks of the season, May 13 – 25; Lunar Sea will be performed the final two weeks, May 27 – June 8.
