A True Story of Neo-Nazis, Drug Smuggling, and Undying Love

NEW YORK , MARCH 1, 2007 -- New York Theatre Workshop Artistic Director James C. Nicola and Managing Director Lynn Moffat have announced the final production of the 2006-2007 season, the world premiere of All the Wrong Reasons: A True Story of Neo-Nazis, Drug Smuggling, and Undying Love, written and performed by John Fugelsang, directed by Pam MacKinnon. All the Wrong Reasons will begin performances on Friday, March 23 at 8:00pm, at New York Theatre Workshop, 79 East 4th Street, between Second Avenue and Bowery. The opening is scheduled for Sunday, April 15.

John Fugelsang is a writer, performer and political commentator who has been seen in comedy clubs across the country and was a regular guest on "Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher." In All the Wrong Reasons: A True Story of Neo-Nazis, Drug Smuggling, and Undying Love , his first solo performance for the stage, Fugelsang begins with the true story of his parents, an ex-nun from the Deep South who left her African convent to marry a former Franciscan brother from Brooklyn. John, the child they promised God they would never, ever have, struggles with existential morality in this comic and dramatic tale of love and blasphemy; depression and the drug war; life and death; and how to offer sexual favors to famous Nazis on the air.

All the Wrong Reasons replaces the previously announced 24 Hours Are Not a Day, written and directed by René Pollesch, in NYTW’s season. A future production date for 24 Hours Are Not a Day has not yet been determined.

John Fugelsang and director Pam MacKinnon participated in our August 2006 residency at Dartmouth College . We immediately knew that we had to share with our audience John's intelligent, witty, heartfelt and highly personal insights about everything from love and marriage to religion and politics. His smart storytelling and real passion create an honest and compelling work."  

John Fugelsang has performed at the US Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen and the Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal . Film and TV credits include Coyote Ugly, Somewhere in The City, “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” “Providence,” “Becker,” over 20 appearances on “Politically Incorrect With Bill Maher,” “Americas Funniest Home Videos,” “TV411” for PBS, “The ACLU Freedom Files” for Court TV, “McEnroe” and “Bullseye” for CNBC, “Paul McCartney’s Live Town Hall” and “George Harrison: The Last Performance” for VH1, and numerous stand-up appearances. New York stage credits include Savage in Limbo, Blue Window, and Junk Male, which played for several years at The Duplex in Greenwich Village . He received the award for “Outstanding New York Monologist” at Lincoln Center from the Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs. His piece on the history of the Drug War was recently published on the Huffington Post.

Pam MacKinnon directed the New York Theatre Workshop production of Bach at Leipzig. She also recently directed a workshop of Itamar Moses' The Four of Us (ACT-San Francisco). She has worked extensively with Edward Albee, having directed the world premiere of Peter and Jerry: Homelife and The Zoo Story (Hartford Stage), the regional and European premieres of The Goat or, Who is Sylvia? (Alley Theatre and Vienna's English Theatre), and The Play About the Baby (Goodman Theatre and Philadelphia Theater Company). She is an Affiliated Artist with Clubbed Thumb, a New York City-based company devoted to new American plays.

All the Wrong Reasons: A True Story of Neo-Nazis, Drug Smuggling, and Undying Love plays at New York Theatre Workshop, 79 East 4th Street, between Second Avenue and Bowery. The regular performance schedule is Tuesday at 7:00pm, Wednesday through Friday at 8:00pm, Saturday at 3:00pm and 8:00pm, and Sunday at 2:00pm and 7:00pm. The running time is approximately one hour and 30 minutes. Maintaining its commitment to making theatre accessible to all theatergoers, NYTW continues its CheapTix program in which all tickets for all Sunday evening performances will cost $20. Tickets may be purchased in advance, payable in cash only, and are available in person only at the NYTW Box Office. And for all performances, student tickets cost $20, based on availability, and can be purchased in advance from the NYTW Box Office with valid student identification.
